Why Coleman

Coleman, Oklahoma home is located in Johnston County on the Intersection of Highways 48.  Coleman is a small town known for it's caring community, beautiful land, ranches and horse breeders.   Coleman is a great place to have property and raise a family.

A little about Coleman

Oklahoma communities in Johnston County that all with in 10-20 minutes of the city of Coleman include: Durant, Caddo, Tishomingo, Kenific, Milburn,  and Nida. Coleman schools are known for excelling in baseball, softball and it academic team. In addition to having a great K-12 school system. Plus you're close to Tishomingo which is the of Murray State College.  Murray State is well known for its Nursing program , Gunsmithing program, Vet Tech program, and School of Business.

The Town of Coleman has been moved three times before its official home that we know as Coleman.  Before statehood Coleman was a called Ego, Indian Territory.  After Oklahoma became a state in 1907, and the K.O & G railroad, the town was moved and renamed "Coleman", now called Old Coleman. After the Great depression, a fire destroying the empty buildings and a tornado destroying  the remaining section of the town. Coleman still had another change when highway 48 was built west of "old Coleman" , and the town moved for the last time in the now location of Coleman.

As the the town of Ego, Indian Territory had a thriving community and trade point with five store, two gins, post office, blacksmith, restaurant, drug store and a one room school house.  Old Coleman, had eight general stores, hardware store, restaurant, barber shop, printing press, garge, bank , hotel, lumber yard, livery stable, two gins and a drug store.

Things to do

This is exactly why outdoor activities will make you want to have property in Coleman, Oklahoma. You can find great public hunting in Johnston County.  The Tishomingo wildlife Refuge, and Blue River is a great start.  The Wildlife Refuge has a duck hunting area just west of Tishomingo in Washita arm of the Refuge. There's even a gun range in the area as well at Murray State College.  For trout fishing, the Blue River hunting and areas just southwest of Coleman.  During trout season the Wildlife department stock trout every couple of week, and late summer catfish!  Living on Coleman give you many different options in outdoor recreation.

Just taking a 30 min drive Northeast to Atoka you have Lake Atoka, Boggy Depot State Park, McGee Creek State Park and Atoka Wildlife Management Area.

McGee Creek State Park offers 2,600 acres with a 3,350 acre lake for swimming, water skiing, sailboarding, boating and fishing in the lower reservoir area. Upper and forested areas of the park offer good hunting.  There's 8,900 acres in the Bugaboo Canyon Natural Scenic Area that provide fishing, hunting and nature studies and to the north of the lake is a 10,000 acre wildlife management area.  Campgrounds are open year round.  In addition, there are miles of multi-use trails that horse enthusiasts can enjoy.  Permits are required for fishing, hunting and boating.

Boggy Depot State Park provides great campgrounds for people to enjoy all that Atoka County in SE Oklahoma has to offer.  You can fish, hike, camp in tents and RVS, also use the baseball diamond, group picnic shelters, playground, charcoal grills and picnic tables.  You'll especially like the comfort stations with showers!

Atoka Lake is a 5,900 acre lake offering 59 miles of shoreline. You'll find boat ramps, a picnic area and playground, plus small camping area available with primitive campsites for both tents and RVs. No water or electric hookups, but generators are welcome.

Atoka Wildlife Management Area covers 6,440 acres north of Atoka on Hwy 69.  The steep to moderately steep terrain is home to quail, white-tailed deer, turkey, rabbit, coyote, bobcat, raccoon, dove, waterfowl and fox and gray squirrels.  Non-game species include bald eagles and numerous species of owls.   70 acres of wildlife habitat plots are planted and maintained annually.  You'll find one designated primitive camping area.  Fishing is available on numerous ponds and Bluestem Lake.

Shopping, Dining and Entertainment

Coleman has things there and around to see, and place to eat.  With Durant and Tishomingo 20 mins away there are plenty of options.  If the rodeo is what you like, you can go to the U-cross Arena and see some awesome barrel racing and roping.  For other family entertainment you can see a movie in Caddo at it's quaint movie theater, or more of a selection you can visit The District at the Choctaw Casino.  Maybe, mom just needs a relaxing day, they also have a great spa!  It's a win win.  If the casino scene isn't where you want to be, there is Spa 211 in Tishomingo that offers many great services.

Who doesn't like good food.  Let me tell you of  some of my favorite and the locals favorite places.  If you're looking for a great home cooked meal for lunch, the corner mart is the place to go!  They offer a home cooked lunch buffet, how much better can that get.   There's nothing like a home cooked meal for lunch that you don't have to make.  f you're in the mood for some BBQ MA and Pa's has it.  They have it all there, and I hear you have to try the catfish.  With a quick drive to Tishomingo, you have Blake Shelton's Old Red.  Pretty much everything on the menu is delicious, my favorite is the brisket tacos.  If you're in the mood for Mexican food Gonzalez Mexican Restaurant in the place to go everything is delicious there.  It's one of my husbands and I favorite places.  If you can catch them while they are open on the weekends Fish tales is a place to go for great seafood.  Now in the other direction to Durant there are plenty of options to eat from.  If you're a sushi person Tokyo is wonderful and they have a hibachi.  There's great Mexican restaurants in Durant but my favorite is Salita's.  They great food, staff and for the margarita  people, great margaritas.  I get something different every time I go and I haven't been let down yet.

Having property in Coleman, Oklahoma puts you in the center of outdoor recreation, family fun and far from the city chaos but close enough to go when you want to go!
